Molly's ninth birthday party (Mohinder's loft, NYC)
She had arrived in New York City a couple of days early to buy the supplies various people had recommended to set up the birthday party. It had been hard not to get distracted by all the people and buildings (it was almost as fascinating as New New York), but thankfully, Mohinder had been willing to help - even offer his loft as the place to hold the party.

Halloween eve arrived quickly enough. Jenny stood in the center of the room, dressed as Supergirl to match Molly's idea of Batgirl. Although she still didn't understand the whole comic book idea, the man in the store had assured her it would be fitting. She surveyed her work and beamed.

The loft was decorated with fake spiderwebs and ghouls and cute little black bats and spiders. In some corners were gravestones with buckets of candy on top of the small mounds. A CD of Halloween tunes played, alternating with groans and creaks and cackles. A witch and a broom hung from the ceiling right near a large banner that exclaimed "HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOLLY!"

It looked good. The cake, in the middle of a table filled with all sorts of junk food and non-alcoholic drinks, also read Happy Birthday Molly, and stood on a platter as the centerpiece. A nearby table was set up for gifts; Jenny had hers placed in one corner - a pocket watch styled three-dimensional map of the known universe.

Everything was ready to go.

The Doctor is unable to attend due to some planetary saving escapade.

A gift, however, is left at the table with the cake. (And some of the cake may or may not be missing).

Mohinder is early to the party. At Jenny's request, he had kept himself away from his loft for most of the day (having spent most of yesterday hiding away anything important and/or valuable), but curiosity and a slight distrust of other people taking over his space meant that he did show up long before the allotted time.

Jenny had done an amazing job, he had to give her that. The place was near unrecognisable.

He wondered whether he could be of any help.
[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 1st, 2008 04:57 pm (UTC)
Much like with Matt, Molly could spot Mohinder anywhere, with-or-without her clairvoyance. Her blue eyes sparkled--even if they were covered by her Batgirl cowl--and she rushed over to her adoptive Dad, her grin taking up her whole face.

"Don't you like it, Mohinder?" She asked while her smile only grew wider. "I think it looks really, really cool!"
[identity profile] genetic-fate.livejournal.com on November 4th, 2008 12:58 pm (UTC)
Mohinder laughed, bending down and heaving his not-so-little-anymore girl into his arms.

"Your friend has done an amazing job, Molly. Happy birthday. And your costume is fantastic."
[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 4th, 2008 04:34 pm (UTC)
Molly hugged him back just as tightly, never wanting to let go. However, if she was going to participate in the party Jenny set out to make for her, she'd have to.

Pulling back some with a permanent smile etched on her face, Molly beamed at his compliment, "Thank you! Did you see Jenny's? She's Supergirl. Batgirl and Supergirl work together to defeat the bad guys like The Joker and stuff."
[identity profile] genetic-fate.livejournal.com on November 4th, 2008 11:52 pm (UTC)
Mohinder set Molly back on her feet, so as to better admire her costume.

"I saw Jenny's, yes. You both look fantastic." He gave her a proud and honest smile.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on November 1st, 2008 08:11 pm (UTC)
"Thank you, Mohinder," Jenny spoke when she saw him enter the loft. "It's a brilliant space to have a party in. I think. I hope."
[identity profile] genetic-fate.livejournal.com on November 4th, 2008 12:59 pm (UTC)
"Oh, no, definitely," Mohinder agreed. Whilst he had never personally considered the possibilities of his lab as a place to host a party, he could not deny that the idea had been inspired. "And you've done a fantastic job with the place, too. Molly will love it, I'm sure."

And lo, Jenny is there at the party, wandering around and trying to be a good hostess (books are quite helpful on these things).

She wants Molly to enjoy this, after all.

She came home from school to find a note and her costume on her bed. Of course, Molly knew what it meant without reading it, and promptly stripped out of her school uniform and into a purple-and-yellow Batgirl suit. It wasn't too tight to where it suffocated; It wasn't too loose to where it swallowed her whole (much like the times she wrapped one of Mohinder's scarves around her neck and Matt said it looked like a Cobra was trying to eat her).

She thought she looked nice in Mohinder's scarves, anyway!

The moment she entered the loft blue eyes gazed up at all the decorations, the background music and most importantly: The cake. Molly was never a girl to jump up and down over presents but eager anticipate the first piece of cake, her sweet tooth overriding any other senses. Molly's face lit up like a Christmas tree when she saw Jenny--Supergirl for today, apparently!--and rushed over toward her friend with outstretched arms.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on November 1st, 2008 08:10 pm (UTC)
Jenny laughed and bent down to scoop Molly up in a big hug. The enthusiasm reflected in the girl's eyes made all the work worth it. Even if a lot of people didn't show up, Molly's birthday part seemed like it would be a success anyway.

"You're welcome! I really, really hope you like it!"
[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 1st, 2008 08:35 pm (UTC)
Molly only hugged Jenny tighter; friends were seldom as it was, but good friends came once and a lifetime. A single person would show up and it would still mean the whole world to Molly, because she knew, unlike many of her peers, that the thought mattered more than the thing itself.

"I do! I really, really do!" She squealed, giggling the entire time.

"Brilliant!"

And she meant it entirely. Hard work could be its own reward at time, but seeing the party come together was better than anything else she expected.
[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 2nd, 2008 08:31 pm (UTC)
Molly released Jenny from her death grip hug and offered her hand out for her to grab it.

"Come on! Claire's here, you would like her!"
[identity profile] adalia-krause.livejournal.com on November 1st, 2008 04:11 am (UTC)
Addie showed up, with a wrapped art set for Molly. She only spoke to the girl a few times, but it was nice to get somewhere where she could meet more people. Making friends was always nice, and so were birthday parties.
[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 1st, 2008 04:35 pm (UTC)
It didn't matter if the guests knew Molly or not; she was just happy to meet new people, much like Addie, and share the newly met people with those she cared about. That was the greatest gift anyone could've given her.

More friends.

Instead of giving a tackling hug like she did to Jenny and Claire, Molly bounced over to the new guest, smiling even as her Batgirl hood began to fall off. "Hello!" She greeted brightly, "I'm really happy you could make it, Addie!"
[identity profile] adalia-krause.livejournal.com on November 1st, 2008 07:16 pm (UTC)
"I am glad too! Happy Birthday!" She offered over the gift "Are you a bat girl? Did I guess your costume correctly?"
[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 1st, 2008 08:37 pm (UTC)
Molly's face melted as she took the gift, generally both surprised (pleasantly!) and touched that someone she just met would do that for her.

"Thank you!" She gushed, wrapping her free arm around Addie's waist in a half-hug. "Yes, I'm Batgirl, you know, Batman's side kick?"
[identity profile] adalia-krause.livejournal.com on November 1st, 2008 09:06 pm (UTC)
Addie smiled, pleased that the girl was happy. "You are welcome! I hope that you enjoy it."

She wasn't very familiar with Batman- only what she had seen in recent cartoons. "Oh, you will fight crime then? The criminals should be very afraid."
[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 2nd, 2008 08:27 pm (UTC)
Molly released a giggle, her cheeks turning a bright pink. "I'd like to be a hero! I know heroes, so I have really good role models!" She declared proudly. If Molly was anything, she was proud of her two Dads, and made sure the world knew it.

However, the mischievous smile wiped the genuine one off her face, "I guess I can fight bad guys now, for Halloween? Sometimes grownups need more protecting than the kids."
[identity profile] adalia-krause.livejournal.com on November 2nd, 2008 08:41 pm (UTC)
"I think you will be a hero, and I am glad that you have good role models!" Addie always loved to see children who were happy.

"Oh yes, you can fight bad guys and save all the grownups from bad things. No one expects the kids to do the saving"
[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 3rd, 2008 03:29 pm (UTC)
Molly beamed brighter than any beacon, any Christmas light and any headlights on a car driving in the dead of night. All she gave in response to Addie's comments were a bright smile and body standing tall and proud, hands on her hips gave the added effect.

After a moment Molly held her hand out to Addie, blue eyes gazing at her brown eyes curiously, "Would you like to play a game? Guests are choosing, not me. It isn't fair that I choose everything when people are nice enough to come."
[identity profile] adalia-krause.livejournal.com on November 3rd, 2008 04:29 pm (UTC)
Addie smiled, amused. Molly looked like a hero at that moment, proud and brave, with her hands on her hips. She would be one day, hopefully with the same, genuine heartwarming smile.

Addie took her hand, and nodded to the girl. "Yes, what games to you have? That is nice of you to let guests choose."
[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 4th, 2008 04:31 pm (UTC)
"Board games, I think? Oh! Twister too!" She bounced on the balls of her feet, leading Addie toward the other people--trying too, at least. If her guests were there she wanted them all to be best, best friends. At least, for her, just for an hour or two. That couldn't hurt--right?

"Claire," gesturing with her free hand toward the blonde teenager in a feminine style of Lewis Caroll's Madhatter, "Suggested all of us group together to decide what to do! And if anyone else comes, we can ask them what they want to do, too!"
[identity profile] adalia-krause.livejournal.com on November 5th, 2008 09:14 am (UTC)
"Twister?" Addie had never played that game. She wasn't sure if she could twist on all of the colored circles, but she would try anything at least once.

"I do not think I know Claire, but I like her costume. She had a very good idea."
[identity profile] its-notluck.livejournal.com on November 1st, 2008 06:27 am (UTC)
Claire decided to come as the female version of the Mad Hatter" (http://www.zoogstercostumes.com/images/products/la83077_xl.jpg) from Alice in Wonderland. It was a cute outfit and she was covered, not showing too much skin which she figured was a good thing for a party for a younger girl's party. Carrying a bag, she smiles softly as she looks around for Molly.
[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 1st, 2008 04:32 pm (UTC)
Molly came toward Claire, her arms out stretched, with a huge smile on her face. Her energy was buzzing, not yet to the boiling part where she'd throw caution away and do what kids do best on Hallows Eve: Give into their sugar high, followed by a rather dramatic crash (and stomachache!)

"Claire! I'm so happy you made it!" Molly squealed, throwing her arms around Claire's middle. She only met the girl once but spoke to her countless of times. They were friends, after all, and friends hugged each other...right? That's what her Mommy always said anyway.
[identity profile] its-notluck.livejournal.com on November 1st, 2008 04:39 pm (UTC)
Claire brightened at the sight of Molly, holding out her arms towards the younger girl and she could see that she was rather energetic at the moment. Not surprising considering it was Halloween and there was a lot of candy around. She could remembering being younger and doing the same thing.

"Of course, I had to come wish you happy birthday." She kneels down a bit, wrapping her arms around Molly and hugging her. She considered the younger girl almost like a little sister that she had never had before, especially after all the times they had talked. "You look cute, I love your costume!"
[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 1st, 2008 04:47 pm (UTC)
"I'm still so glad you came!" She burst, returning Claire's hug with all she had, letting her gratitude overflow in that single gesture.

Molly was an only child, her parents were only children, and her grandparents were only children. The interactions she had with Elle and Claire made her feel what it would be like to have big sisters--only without the fighting, even thought she was a hundred percent sure they'd forgive each other in a moment's notice! That's what family did, after all.

Besides! Molly knew blood wasn't the only thing to make up a family; it was love. Mohinder and Matt weren't her Daddies by blood, but they were her Daddies in every way that counted. So why couldn't Elle and Claire be her sisters, too?

"Thank you!" Molly chirped her countenance lighting up like a Christmas tree at Claire's compliment. "I picked it out all by myself! I like your costume, too!" Molly complimented as she bobbed her head, self-assured in her views.
[identity profile] its-notluck.livejournal.com on November 1st, 2008 04:53 pm (UTC)
Claire smiled warmly as she hugged Molly a little tighter and then let go.

There was a lot of similarities between her and Molly, both of them being raised by people who weren't blood relatives to them. She hadn't lost her parents to a monster but her biological parents had thought she was dead. They had both seen way too much in their young lives and that was something that was going to stick with them for the rest of their lives.

She had a protective instinct over Molly already and she didn't see that changing at all.

"Thank you, I figured you'd recognize the Mad Hatter. Or I was hoping." She laughs a little, adjusting her hat a bit before glancing around, "This looks like a great party. How old are you turning now?"
[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 1st, 2008 05:15 pm (UTC)
They were two girls who have seen their share of monsters, nightmares and other things that children of all ages should never witness; trauma doesn't discriminate against age, though, and Molly and Claire were prime examples for that. Life went on and here the two girls were, smiling and celebrating a holiday that many enjoyed, both young and old.

Molly let out a giggle before jumping up and down a few times, her face still lit up like a Christmas tree. "Nine! That means it's only nine more years before I'm old enough to move out, vote and have my own car!" She declared as her blue eyes danced with wonder, throwing her hands in the air in emphasis.

Maybe that was what it was, that they knew the things that they had seen didn't discriminate against age. Both of them had been touched by a particular monster as well, it gave them something else to bond about even if that was a really bad thing thing to use as a bonding experience. But she liked the fact that Molly could smile and enjoy life despite everything.

"That's not that long at all." Claire chuckled, smiling as she nods her head, "I just turned eighteen in August, it's definitely a nice age." Looking around, "So what can we do? Games or something?"
[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 1st, 2008 08:44 pm (UTC)
Molly lost so much, like Claire, but gained so much more, like Claire. The similarities didn't go unnoticed by the nine year old; even if she didn't exactly know all of what Claire had been through. Not that she needed to know, not really. The bond was still there and it only made Molly gaze up at the teenager with bright, adoring eyes even more.

She hoped that, one day, she'll be as strong as Claire was. That would be cool.

Molly beamed when Claire didn't dispute her childish exaggerations, but encouraged it. That's another reason why she enjoyed talking to Claire and Elle: They didn't make fun of her, or call her silly--unless she was trying to be, of course! "I think we have board games and twister!" Molly's eyes brightened and then released another giggle. "I think you'll be able to beat Matt at twister but he's a good sport, so he won't be mad at you."
[identity profile] its-notluck.livejournal.com on November 2nd, 2008 05:30 am (UTC)
Claire smiled down at the younger girl, noting the adoring eyes and she had to admit that it was nice to have someone who looked up to her. Sure, there was a little bit of pressure that came with it now but she didn't mind. She just hoped that she could look out for the girl like others were looking out for her.

She already thought Molly was very strong.

"Oh trust me, I'd definitely beat him." Claire nods her head with a smirk, "I was a cheerleader after all, Twister is a sport to me." She giggles a little as she keeps an arm around Molly's shoulders and then looks at her, "Hey, where do we put the presents?" She holds up the pink and blue checkered gift bag that she was carrying.

[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 2nd, 2008 08:23 pm (UTC)
"A cheerleader?" Molly gaped animatedly. "Were you really popular, too?" Of course! Molly only ever saw/heard of popular cheerleaders that were always beautiful, nice and talented. And Molly knew Claire was nice, beautiful and talented, so it only fit! "I'd like to be a cheerleader, but I'm not that limber."

She was also a wee bit scared of heights. She's seen the cheerleaders on TV twirl around in the air and being thrown oh-so-high--it looked scary!

Molly's eyes twinkled when she saw the pink and blue checkered gift bag, her face automatically softening. "You shouldn't have, Claire!" She gushed yet again, her eyes twinkling with adoration. Really, no one needed to get her anything; being there was a good enough present to Molly. "Thank you so much!" With her gloved finger she pointed toward the table, giving a bright smile, "There!"
[identity profile] its-notluck.livejournal.com on November 2nd, 2008 08:26 pm (UTC)
Claire blinked a little at the reaction and then she laughed with a little nod, "I was, a bit. Not for long, I refused to give up one my friends near the end and well, it was fun though." Claire smiles, not wanting to get into it too much. "It's not that hard, I think you would be great at it. Just know how to dance a little and follow choreography. Ask Mohinder about gymnastics."

"Of course I should have, silly!" She smiled, then glanced over at the table before nodding. Carrying the bag over, she sets it down and then turns back to the birthday girl. "Alright, so what should we do now?"
[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 3rd, 2008 03:26 pm (UTC)
"Oh, well, friends are more important than cheerleading anyway!" Molly didn't press on afterward; she knew when to press on with questions and when to quit. However, that was only under serious circumstances, otherwise she'd content herself with every single thought that popped into her head. ...Which she did, ninety-nine percent of the time. When Claire said she'd make a good cheerleader, Molly blushed. "Really?"

Gymnastics and dance class it was, then! All she had to do was save her super powers--puppy dog eyes--for the most opportune moment and lay it on Matt and Mohinder like there was no tomorrow.

"Hmm!" Molly thought dramatically, a gloved index finger tapping her chin. "We could play scrabble or--or ask some other guest what they want to do?" Molly considered thoughtfully, gazing up at Claire with all too serious eyes for such a simple situation. "Just because it's, technically, my party doesn't mean I have to call the shots. It wouldn't be fair to anyone else."
[identity profile] its-notluck.livejournal.com on November 3rd, 2008 03:42 pm (UTC)
"Yes, they are, it's a good thing that you learned that early." Claire hadn't been so lucky and it had nearly cost her Zach but she caught on after awhile that being popular wasn't everything. Especially when it ended up costing her so much. Looking at Molly as she blushes, Claire giggles a little with a nod of her head, "Really." She brushes some hair back from Molly's face with a tender action.

She wondered if she would get a call from Matt or Mohinder soon about how Molly talked them into putting her into classes so that she could become a cheerleader eventually. Should be fun.

"Well, why don't we ask the others what they want to do and round them up." She smiles with a nod of her head, "We'll do some group activities." She nods as she looks over the guests.
[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 4th, 2008 04:26 pm (UTC)
Molly's eyes brightened. Once again, Claire had proven herself worthy for the title Smartest, Coolest and Nicest Teenager in the World. "That's a good idea! There are some guests here, already, and Jenny--she made the decorations and stuff!" She chirped quite proud of her observational skills. "Mohinder's here, too, I'm sure he'd like to play?"

Of course, he would with her puppy-eyes-of-doom, that is. Not that she had to use them too much; Molly knew they were wrapped around her finger and only used it under serious circumstances. Like dressing up for Halloween, letting her take on Cheerleading, or even a board game or two...

She tried for a pony. Never worked.

Claire would say that Molly was probably a little biased on the whole title thing but she didn't really mind. Glancing around, she smiled, "Well, she did a great job, it looks good." Claire was proud of herself for not slipping at all at the mention of Mohinder. They tried to be okay with each other but it was still hard, with the fact that Mohinder had shot her dad in front of her. But Molly didn't need to know that, she cared for Mohinder and he seemed to care for her. Claire didn't need to ruin that.

"I'm sure he would, we should ask him." She nods her head, smiling down at Molly as they moved forward to try to gather people into playing some kind of game to make things more fun. She knew what it was like to have the puppy dog eyes, though her dad eventually got pretty good at ignoring her.
