Molly's ninth birthday party (Mohinder's loft, NYC)
She had arrived in New York City a couple of days early to buy the supplies various people had recommended to set up the birthday party. It had been hard not to get distracted by all the people and buildings (it was almost as fascinating as New New York), but thankfully, Mohinder had been willing to help - even offer his loft as the place to hold the party.

Halloween eve arrived quickly enough. Jenny stood in the center of the room, dressed as Supergirl to match Molly's idea of Batgirl. Although she still didn't understand the whole comic book idea, the man in the store had assured her it would be fitting. She surveyed her work and beamed.

The loft was decorated with fake spiderwebs and ghouls and cute little black bats and spiders. In some corners were gravestones with buckets of candy on top of the small mounds. A CD of Halloween tunes played, alternating with groans and creaks and cackles. A witch and a broom hung from the ceiling right near a large banner that exclaimed "HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOLLY!"

It looked good. The cake, in the middle of a table filled with all sorts of junk food and non-alcoholic drinks, also read Happy Birthday Molly, and stood on a platter as the centerpiece. A nearby table was set up for gifts; Jenny had hers placed in one corner - a pocket watch styled three-dimensional map of the known universe.

Everything was ready to go.

Claire brightened at the sight of Molly, holding out her arms towards the younger girl and she could see that she was rather energetic at the moment. Not surprising considering it was Halloween and there was a lot of candy around. She could remembering being younger and doing the same thing.

"Of course, I had to come wish you happy birthday." She kneels down a bit, wrapping her arms around Molly and hugging her. She considered the younger girl almost like a little sister that she had never had before, especially after all the times they had talked. "You look cute, I love your costume!"

"I'm still so glad you came!" She burst, returning Claire's hug with all she had, letting her gratitude overflow in that single gesture.

Molly was an only child, her parents were only children, and her grandparents were only children. The interactions she had with Elle and Claire made her feel what it would be like to have big sisters--only without the fighting, even thought she was a hundred percent sure they'd forgive each other in a moment's notice! That's what family did, after all.

Besides! Molly knew blood wasn't the only thing to make up a family; it was love. Mohinder and Matt weren't her Daddies by blood, but they were her Daddies in every way that counted. So why couldn't Elle and Claire be her sisters, too?

"Thank you!" Molly chirped her countenance lighting up like a Christmas tree at Claire's compliment. "I picked it out all by myself! I like your costume, too!" Molly complimented as she bobbed her head, self-assured in her views.

Claire smiled warmly as she hugged Molly a little tighter and then let go.

There was a lot of similarities between her and Molly, both of them being raised by people who weren't blood relatives to them. She hadn't lost her parents to a monster but her biological parents had thought she was dead. They had both seen way too much in their young lives and that was something that was going to stick with them for the rest of their lives.

She had a protective instinct over Molly already and she didn't see that changing at all.

"Thank you, I figured you'd recognize the Mad Hatter. Or I was hoping." She laughs a little, adjusting her hat a bit before glancing around, "This looks like a great party. How old are you turning now?"

They were two girls who have seen their share of monsters, nightmares and other things that children of all ages should never witness; trauma doesn't discriminate against age, though, and Molly and Claire were prime examples for that. Life went on and here the two girls were, smiling and celebrating a holiday that many enjoyed, both young and old.

Molly let out a giggle before jumping up and down a few times, her face still lit up like a Christmas tree. "Nine! That means it's only nine more years before I'm old enough to move out, vote and have my own car!" She declared as her blue eyes danced with wonder, throwing her hands in the air in emphasis.

Maybe that was what it was, that they knew the things that they had seen didn't discriminate against age. Both of them had been touched by a particular monster as well, it gave them something else to bond about even if that was a really bad thing thing to use as a bonding experience. But she liked the fact that Molly could smile and enjoy life despite everything.

"That's not that long at all." Claire chuckled, smiling as she nods her head, "I just turned eighteen in August, it's definitely a nice age." Looking around, "So what can we do? Games or something?"

Molly lost so much, like Claire, but gained so much more, like Claire. The similarities didn't go unnoticed by the nine year old; even if she didn't exactly know all of what Claire had been through. Not that she needed to know, not really. The bond was still there and it only made Molly gaze up at the teenager with bright, adoring eyes even more.

She hoped that, one day, she'll be as strong as Claire was. That would be cool.

Molly beamed when Claire didn't dispute her childish exaggerations, but encouraged it. That's another reason why she enjoyed talking to Claire and Elle: They didn't make fun of her, or call her silly--unless she was trying to be, of course! "I think we have board games and twister!" Molly's eyes brightened and then released another giggle. "I think you'll be able to beat Matt at twister but he's a good sport, so he won't be mad at you."

Claire smiled down at the younger girl, noting the adoring eyes and she had to admit that it was nice to have someone who looked up to her. Sure, there was a little bit of pressure that came with it now but she didn't mind. She just hoped that she could look out for the girl like others were looking out for her.

She already thought Molly was very strong.

"Oh trust me, I'd definitely beat him." Claire nods her head with a smirk, "I was a cheerleader after all, Twister is a sport to me." She giggles a little as she keeps an arm around Molly's shoulders and then looks at her, "Hey, where do we put the presents?" She holds up the pink and blue checkered gift bag that she was carrying.

[identity profile] humanmapquest.livejournal.com on November 2nd, 2008 08:23 pm (UTC)
"A cheerleader?" Molly gaped animatedly. "Were you really popular, too?" Of course! Molly only ever saw/heard of popular cheerleaders that were always beautiful, nice and talented. And Molly knew Claire was nice, beautiful and talented, so it only fit! "I'd like to be a cheerleader, but I'm not that limber."

She was also a wee bit scared of heights. She's seen the cheerleaders on TV twirl around in the air and being thrown oh-so-high--it looked scary!

Molly's eyes twinkled when she saw the pink and blue checkered gift bag, her face automatically softening. "You shouldn't have, Claire!" She gushed yet again, her eyes twinkling with adoration. Really, no one needed to get her anything; being there was a good enough present to Molly. "Thank you so much!" With her gloved finger she pointed toward the table, giving a bright smile, "There!"

Claire blinked a little at the reaction and then she laughed with a little nod, "I was, a bit. Not for long, I refused to give up one my friends near the end and well, it was fun though." Claire smiles, not wanting to get into it too much. "It's not that hard, I think you would be great at it. Just know how to dance a little and follow choreography. Ask Mohinder about gymnastics."

"Of course I should have, silly!" She smiled, then glanced over at the table before nodding. Carrying the bag over, she sets it down and then turns back to the birthday girl. "Alright, so what should we do now?"

"Oh, well, friends are more important than cheerleading anyway!" Molly didn't press on afterward; she knew when to press on with questions and when to quit. However, that was only under serious circumstances, otherwise she'd content herself with every single thought that popped into her head. ...Which she did, ninety-nine percent of the time. When Claire said she'd make a good cheerleader, Molly blushed. "Really?"

Gymnastics and dance class it was, then! All she had to do was save her super powers--puppy dog eyes--for the most opportune moment and lay it on Matt and Mohinder like there was no tomorrow.

"Hmm!" Molly thought dramatically, a gloved index finger tapping her chin. "We could play scrabble or--or ask some other guest what they want to do?" Molly considered thoughtfully, gazing up at Claire with all too serious eyes for such a simple situation. "Just because it's, technically, my party doesn't mean I have to call the shots. It wouldn't be fair to anyone else."
[identity profile] its-notluck.livejournal.com on November 3rd, 2008 03:42 pm (UTC)
"Yes, they are, it's a good thing that you learned that early." Claire hadn't been so lucky and it had nearly cost her Zach but she caught on after awhile that being popular wasn't everything. Especially when it ended up costing her so much. Looking at Molly as she blushes, Claire giggles a little with a nod of her head, "Really." She brushes some hair back from Molly's face with a tender action.

She wondered if she would get a call from Matt or Mohinder soon about how Molly talked them into putting her into classes so that she could become a cheerleader eventually. Should be fun.

"Well, why don't we ask the others what they want to do and round them up." She smiles with a nod of her head, "We'll do some group activities." She nods as she looks over the guests.

Molly's eyes brightened. Once again, Claire had proven herself worthy for the title Smartest, Coolest and Nicest Teenager in the World. "That's a good idea! There are some guests here, already, and Jenny--she made the decorations and stuff!" She chirped quite proud of her observational skills. "Mohinder's here, too, I'm sure he'd like to play?"

Of course, he would with her puppy-eyes-of-doom, that is. Not that she had to use them too much; Molly knew they were wrapped around her finger and only used it under serious circumstances. Like dressing up for Halloween, letting her take on Cheerleading, or even a board game or two...

She tried for a pony. Never worked.

Claire would say that Molly was probably a little biased on the whole title thing but she didn't really mind. Glancing around, she smiled, "Well, she did a great job, it looks good." Claire was proud of herself for not slipping at all at the mention of Mohinder. They tried to be okay with each other but it was still hard, with the fact that Mohinder had shot her dad in front of her. But Molly didn't need to know that, she cared for Mohinder and he seemed to care for her. Claire didn't need to ruin that.

"I'm sure he would, we should ask him." She nods her head, smiling down at Molly as they moved forward to try to gather people into playing some kind of game to make things more fun. She knew what it was like to have the puppy dog eyes, though her dad eventually got pretty good at ignoring her.
