OOM: Edward needs to learn how to have fun.
"I think we'll start with Dagobah," Jenny told him as she walked towards the cockpit of her small shuttle. "According to my computer, it's a small swamp planet discovered a thousand years ago by a sect of Jedi who had broken away from the Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire after a deceleration decreeing all religions founded upon fictional works were null and void. There's not much there now. It's been abandoned... um, well, for a while."

She stopped by her chair, turning around to make sure that Edward had indeed followed her from Milliways.

Her shuttle wasn't much, Jenny knew, but she considered it her life. It was the only home she had (unless you counted the room in Milliways) and her only means of actually doing anything. Well, anything remotely interesting. Random knickknacks from various planets were scattered about the room, mostly concentrated away from the cockpit and in the back of the shuttle. A couple of photographs of herself and Bart were taped on to various walls. Her prized piece of psychic paper was lying underneath a stack of books.

It felt more like a home now than when she commandeered it from Messaline.

"Well?" Jenny slid into the pilot's seat and looked at him. "Whatcha think, Edward?"

Unlike the ride, the Star Poet's performance didn't go by too quickly. It didn't go by too slowly, either. It seemed just right. Absolutely perfect.

When it ended, Jenny sat stunned for a second before bursting into a loud applause. The rest of the crowd followed seconds later.

She nudged Edward in the side. Jenny looked him over quickly before asking in a revered tone, "Wasn't that amazing?"

Edward opened his eyes at the nudge, realizing then he had at some point closed them. Let himself be swept away in the awe of her narrative and ability, pushing away (some of) the outward distractions that might snag his attention.

"Very," he said, tone soft as he felt a longing to sit and play again. Twice in so many weeks after so long.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 27th, 2008 07:07 pm (UTC)
Jenny smiled softly at his response and she rested her head against his arm. The applause had begun to die down and the Star Poet was finishing her last bows. She giggled a little and clapped one or two more times.

"She was brilliant," she murmured, blinking back tears. The mention of the lonely gods had struck a chord. It made her think of her father and of what she might become someday. "It nearly hurt listening to her. But in a good way, I think."

Edward clapped along with the people who finished up, gently for the fact Jenny's head lay on his arm and he didn't want to bump her too hard suddenly with the movement.

"Some of the best things are."

The price of the shadow and the beauty of what it brought.

He glanced at the top of her head on his arm, thinking this wasn't as horrible as it could be.

"It's not entirely fair though," Jenny sighed as some people stood to talk with the Butterfly Person. She stood there gracefully, willing to talk to anyone and everyone. "What if we didn't ask for this sort of life? I think I would've been completely content with life as a soldier."

Of course, she never would have known any better.
Edward Cullen: I wanted to know[personal profile] themidnightson on August 27th, 2008 07:41 pm (UTC)
"I was going to be."

The words came before he meant them to, which caused him to chuckle and look from her head to the Butterfly Woman and her crowd.

"Before I fell sick I was counting down the months until I could be drafted and fight in in the first world war. I hadn't counted on doing otherwise."

She tilted her head up in surprise. He never came across as the soldier sort to Jenny, only the really loyal and overly protective type. Although, she had to admit, those were good qualities for a soldier. He would've made for someone she would have been proud to work beside in a militia.

"And now we've both wound up with lives that want us to do otherwise. And won't let us die, either, not properly, not if we can avoid it," she whispered, looking a little worried It was like that conversation from earlier. "How do you live with it, Edward?"

"One day at a time."

It was a poor answer, as he thought about waking up from thinking he was dead.

Then.

"With the help of family."
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 28th, 2008 02:18 am (UTC)
Family.

Jenny had a father, yes, but not the sort of father that would probably ever stick around, even if she did find him again. At first, when she had left Messaline, she thought this freedom would be increadible. But after hearing so much about families, she was starting to doubt it.

"Something that I probably won't ever really have," she muttered glumly.

"You'll find your place, or it'll find you." Edward stood up in a refined and graceful manner, that to him still seemed far too slow and calm. "I didn't wake up the first day with mine."

No, in fact, he didn't.

He was alone. There was Carlisle. And the void.

(And never alone, thanks to the sudden deluge of voices in his head.)

And neither did she. But it's been two months.

"What about you?" Jenny tore her gaze from the Arcateenian to look up at Edward. She tried not to look as desperate and worried as she suddenly felt. "You and your family? You're the only other person I've ever met who's going to live anywhere as long as me. And you're good at this. You're good at this big brother thing."
Edward Cullen: Losing this one[personal profile] themidnightson on August 28th, 2008 02:50 am (UTC)
"You hardly know me, Jenny."

He wasn't sure he was good for his family. They weren't always sure he was good in and of himself. But they were family and it had meant, aside from his minor rebellion, that they would stand by him.

"You have the whole world spread out before you. You don't know what other things you might still find." That weren't monsters. "Give it time."
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 28th, 2008 03:14 am (UTC)
"But I like you, Edward. You're a lot like me."

So what if she hardly knew him? Technically, they both had lifetimes and lifetimes to get to know each other. What she saw she liked.

"And you're not a monster," she chimed in, eyes narrowing as if she could read his mind. "No matter what that book claims vampires are supposed to be. You didn't ask for this life. You were going to be a soldier, fight for your cause and die young. Not live forever. I'm never going to find anyone else who understands like you do."
Edward Cullen: Cold days in Hell[personal profile] themidnightson on August 28th, 2008 03:21 am (UTC)
He wasn't usually antagonistically inclined to disagree with outward vehemence on whether he was or wasn't a monster, given his family and lifestyle, but everything had changed recently. Everything.

Because of damned Bella Swan and her damned blood.

Edward sighed, forcing an expel of air, and let the shadows of it stay in his expression. "You won't see reason on this even if I counter. Did you want to speak to the poet or to leave?"
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 28th, 2008 03:37 am (UTC)
Jenny watched him quietly and thoughtfully. There was something going on that he wasn't quite admitting to. She wondered what it was. Did someone bother him about what he was? She remembered Medusa mentioning problems with others because she ate human bodies.

She was curious, but for once she didn't pry.

"It's your choice, Edward. I'll probably find another opportunity. What about you? Wanna talk to her?"
Edward Cullen: Chagrin[personal profile] themidnightson on August 28th, 2008 03:42 am (UTC)
It brought her back, even as he pushed it away. The ache and longing that he couldn't quite define. For her blood; yet it was her chocolate brown eyes and her brightly flushed face, quick with kitten-like rage, that seeped back in, striking a chord of guilt that was not the same as the shame the other evoked.

"I would, in case I don't have the chance."

Edward walked past her down the aisle, aiming for a dissembling that didn't involve a frown.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 28th, 2008 03:51 am (UTC)
Jenny hurried after him. There was something up with him. He had opened up to her so much already. Maybe she would get lucky. If not, there was always next time?

Ew. Patience wasn't fun.

By the time they reached the Star Poet, most of the other visitors had begun to trickle out. The personal conversation between them had taken up time.

Gracefully, the Butterfly Person turned her head to look at them both. Jenny smiled, standing close to Edward. "Hello."
Edward Cullen: Dazzling Face[personal profile] themidnightson on August 28th, 2008 03:58 am (UTC)
He saw her through the lens of another face, refusing the leave, but the peace and beauty of her mind, even the stray thoughts of her next performance and the refuge of the break between them, helped to calm the whirl of his mind.

"We wanted to express our gratitude for your performance. It was unparalleled."
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 28th, 2008 04:06 am (UTC)
"Absolutely brilliant," Jenny added in enthusiastically. She beamed at the woman and quickly glanced between her and Edward. "It scared me a little, but I liked it. A whole lot."

The Arcateenian laughed and nodded her head in a graceful manner. The sound of her voice echoed in Jenny's head. The psychic communicator was still activated.

"Thank you both. It pleases me to know I can reach the hearts of two such as yourselves."
Edward Cullen: Removed in the process[personal profile] themidnightson on August 28th, 2008 04:15 am (UTC)
Edward wondered at the depth of her comment. It was one easily both accessibly normal and yet capable of meaning much more from someone psychic.

"It would be hard for it not to touch the heart of anyone who heard it," he followed on. "It speaks well of life reflected in every micro- and macrocosm, even those that most can only dream toward understanding."
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 28th, 2008 04:26 am (UTC)
Jenny nodded, so very close to chiming in with a 'what he said.' She realised quickly enough that it wouldn't sound nearly as mature as Edward's words did. She remained quiet instead, letting him have this moment.

"It is true what is said: travel does broaden ones mind," the alien pointed out, smiling wryly as her lips never moved. "I do hope that you have a chance to discover such one day, more, I would say, than you already have."
Edward Cullen: Uncertain Amusement or Annoyance[personal profile] themidnightson on August 28th, 2008 04:34 am (UTC)
Edward didn't smile, but he didn't frown. He did something remarkably different. He thought toward the Butterfly Woman, the way his family did to him, without looking to Jenny or shifting, It would be much harder not to after this.

Giving a nod, he said, "Should that come about, I'll have to find another seat at your performances." Edward glanced to Jenny to see if she had anything else she wanted to say.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 28th, 2008 04:43 am (UTC)
The lady nodded, her gaze holding on him. His message had been heard by his intended target. Oblivious to the both of them, Jenny grinned. "Oh, you can count on that. We'll both come to another performance, I promise."

"Thank you, Lady of Time," she replied. "And you, young Cullen. I would look forward to hearing both of your stories further at some future point."
Edward Cullen: Laugh it up Chuckles[personal profile] themidnightson on August 28th, 2008 04:49 am (UTC)
Edward chuckled, under his breath, across his darker thoughts, at Jenny's exuberant vow. He nodded a last time and held out his hand in a gesture for her to be able to walk back up the aisle first that they could wind their way out again.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 28th, 2008 04:57 am (UTC)
His gesture was purposely misinterpreted. Jenny grasped his hand with hers before walking up the aisle, dragging him alongside her. She glanced behind her briefly to take one last look at the pretty Star Poet.

Jenny chuckled softly and shrugged, taking a deep breath of the artificial air once under the dome. "She was lovely, wasn't she?"
