He sounded like a man anyone with half a mind ought to admire. Jenny smiled back, feeling jealous tears prick her eyes.

Didn't he realise how lucky he was? Her father wanted nothing to do with her when she was born. Even though Dad changed his mind about having a soldier for a daughter, that initial sting never quite went away. She wasn't used to feeling like that this strongly, either. No one ever gave her a reason to be envious before.

"I'd have to find him first," she answered quietly, almost a whisper. "And I honestly don't know if I ever will. Not when he has all of time and space at his hands, when he thinks I'm dead. You're lucky, Edward. You're really lucky."
