From here:

This time, when Jenny had programmed the vortex manipulator, she had paid specific detail to every button and control. She held Jamie's hand tightly and then the world lurched around them.

Rather than arriving back in her shuttle, as she had planned, she and Jamie appeared a few rows down within the space station on Nevona 9. Her cheeks tinted rose in colour as she let go of Jamie's hand, now that their balance had stabled.

"I think I missed my target again."

Fortunately for Jenny, Jamie was rather used to winding up places that are not where originally intended. He thought perhaps it simply ran in the family, this particular trait, though he had manners enough not to say so to Jenny. Especially not when she was already blushing from embarrassment at it.

"Cannae be any worse than some of the places the TARDIS has landed," he told her reassuringly. "I'm not sure if ye know this or not, but your dad never ends up where he means to."

He glanced over his shoulder, half expecting the Doctor and Zoe to still be standing there, right where he left them. A pang of guilt hit Jamie when he realized that no, of course they weren't there, and it was silly to think, even unwillingly, that they might be. He left them, and now there was nothing he could do about it. Not that he was entirely regretful. He wanted to travel with Jenny, it just felt terrible to have walked out on the Doctor like that when he had been in such a crisis. Still though, nothing to be done about that now.

It was something Jenny had learned while she had travelled with her father. Every day had been something new, another planet and another adventure, sometimes a time and place she couldn't even imagine. The thought made her miss him for a moment, wondering if the dad she had just left behind would be okay.

Well, of course he would. He still had to live to have her, didn't he?

So Jenny smiled and nodded. "He doesn't, does he?"

From the way in which she said it, she couldn't sound any prouder.

Jamie smiled over at Jenny. The Doctor might have been her father, but he was Jamie's best friend, and it made him glad to hear her sound so proud about him.

"Aye, well," he said, shuffling his feet a bit. "I'm just glad we didn't end up in the Himalayas, or in the middle of an ocean or any such place this time." He had no idea if where they were was even anywhere remotely near what Jenny had been hoping for, but it looked docile enough.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on April 30th, 2009 07:51 pm (UTC)
Jenny nodded, trying her best to follow along. The Himalayas must have been some strange star system her dad took Jamie too. It was hard to wonder too much when Jamie smiled at her like that.

"We're on Nevona 9. Just not in my space ship. It's not as big as the TARDIS, but I like it." Her grin turned bashful again, just for a moment. "I hope you'll like it, too."
[identity profile] creag-an-tuire.livejournal.com on May 1st, 2009 05:55 am (UTC)
"Ohh, that's good then!" Jamie said, glad that they were in the general area of where they had been trying to get. "Ye know, ye are a lot better at this than the Doctor."

When he noticed how bashful she seemed, he placed a hand on her shoulder, really hoping it might seem comforting, because he didn't want her to seem so worried about it. "I'm sure I'll love it."

The hand on her shoulder made her hearts thump almost too loudly in Jenny's opinion. It had been different with other boys; she hadn't ever felt like this before. Jenny nodded and beamed at him.

"Brilliant. You'll have to tell me where you want to go first," she decided quickly. "Anywhere! We can go anywhere as long as I have the vortex manipulator. That sound's brilliant, doesn't it?"
[identity profile] creag-an-tuire.livejournal.com on May 4th, 2009 07:58 pm (UTC)
When she smiled like that, Jamie couldn't help but notice how beautiful of a lass she was. She seemed so very... so very... Well. Jamie couldn't exactly put his finger on it, but there was something about her that he quite liked a lot. It was almost like she'd inherited all of the Doctor's good traits, without getting the silly, frustrating ones... except that no, no, it sounded weird when he explained it like that. He, well, he just liked her. A lot. More than a lot, actually.

"Er, ah, well. I dinnae really know many places, apart from the ones I've already been to," he admitted, embarrassed. "Usually I just go wherever the Doctor winds up taking us to. So... I suppose wherever ye want to go is fine. If ye've got any ideas in mind."
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 4th, 2009 10:39 pm (UTC)
Jenny nodded. That gave her a lot of freedom, more freedom than she was used to having. The last person she had travelled with had been her father. Back then, it had been difficult to be able to chose destinations.

It could be fun, travelling like this.

"Okay." She tugged on his arm and led him down an aisle of spaceships. "Anywhere. Okay. I can think of something. Something brilliant. Like... Like Tandalion! Ever been to Tandalion?"
[identity profile] creag-an-tuire.livejournal.com on May 5th, 2009 03:01 am (UTC)
Jamie paused, thinking of as many names of places he'd been as possible before deciding that, "No, I dinnae think I've ever been there."

Usually the TARDIS took them to Earth, anyway. Bit odd, that.

"What's it like there? Do ye know?" He really hoped it would be the first truly-peaceful place he'd ever been to, because he didn't want Jenny to be in any harm, but, well. If she had luck anything like what her father had, then Jamie's hopes were rather futile.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 5th, 2009 07:13 pm (UTC)
That would be good, wouldn't it? That he hadn't been there and she could show him a whole new planet? She beamed and nodded, remembering what she had read on her navigator.

"Yeah! It's an ocean planet. Lots of water everywhere. Never been there," she continued, coming to a stop in front of her spaceship. "But there's an underwater city! I've never been to an underwater city before. Have you?"
[identity profile] creag-an-tuire.livejournal.com on May 7th, 2009 03:50 am (UTC)
"Aye," he said, nodding slightly. "I have. Long time ago, though." But he had to admit, he wasn't exactly sure how long ago it actually was. It had been the first place the Doctor had taken him, but who could know how much time had passed since then?

There was no such thing as 'weeks', 'months', or 'years' when you were inside the TARDIS. The only real way to tell tomorrow from today was whether or not you'd gone to sleep yet. Traveling with the Doctor meant a perpetual state of jet-lag, or as close to the idea of 'jet-lag' as Jamie's 18th century mindset could appropriate. Sometimes you'd arrive in a place during the morning and be expected to share breakfast with strangers when really you'd been awake for over twelve hours and honestly just wanted to settle down in a bed for the night. It was hard for Jamie to wrap his mind around the question of 'how long', despite having traveled like that for so long -- or perhaps, more accurately, because of it.

It certainly seemed as though he had spent years and years and an entire lifetime with the Doctor, and yet at the same time, it felt like just last week that he'd met the man. He could still quite vividly remember that day... Polly asking the Doctor if Jamie could join, the Doctor saying he could so long as Jamie taught him to play the pipes, and Jamie agreeing though not knowing exactly what direction his life would suddenly take upon entering the TARDIS.

He never did quite get around to teaching the Doctor to play. In a somewhat amused thought, Jamie wondered exactly how different his new life with Jenny might be from what he was expecting.

"So I take it this is it then?" He asked, turning towards the ship.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 7th, 2009 03:55 am (UTC)
Jenny nodded, blushing again. After seeing the TARDIS again, even in her earlier days, she had suddenly been reminded just how much her shuttle paled in comparison. It was small, barely comfortable for two individuals. It didn't travel in time. For that, she had to use her stolen vortex manipulator.

Not for the first time since making her spontaneous offer, she wished Jamie wouldn't mind.

"It is," she answered, keying in the combination on the wrist strap. A door lowered, with steps leading upward. "She's Messalanian in manufacture. A transport shuttle, not meant for combat."

One of the few things on the planet that wasn't.

Tentatively, Jenny reached out to grasp Jamie's hand in her own. "I hope you like her, Jamie."
[identity profile] creag-an-tuire.livejournal.com on May 7th, 2009 04:11 am (UTC)
Though the explanation about the ship's manufacture meant little to Jamie, he understood the difference in it being for transport as opposed to combat. Combat was a thing he knew quite well, and in his travels he had found that even throughout the galaxy and all of time, little changed about the theories behind it.

His thoughts were interrupted though, when suddenly he realized that, oh look, Jenny was holding his hand. Despite himself, he could feel his face turning a little pink. "She-- she's lovely, Jenny!"
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 7th, 2009 04:21 am (UTC)
She looked at him and giggled, her own cheeks going pink. Even if Jenny had been able to seduce Cline and Darc and many an other man without a problem, everything still seemed different with Jamie. She'd never want to seduce him or use him. She only wanted to make him blush like that whenever he looked at her.

"Wait till you see inside," she answered, heading up the steps and pulling him with her.

The inside of the shuttle was about the size you would expect given the outside. Two bunks were shoved to one side, in a small communal/living area. Everywhere was cluttered - with books or clothing or artefacts from the different planets she visited. The actual cockpit sat at the very front.

Jenny stood in the middle, now having let go of Jamie's hand to look at him. "Do you still like her?"
[identity profile] creag-an-tuire.livejournal.com on May 7th, 2009 04:43 am (UTC)
Well, it definitely wasn't as large as the TARDIS, that much went without saying. Of course, few places were as large as the TARDIS, so that wasn't anything really to go by. Jamie had once set out to find exactly where the Doctor's ship ended, and after what had seemed an eternity of wandering finally given up.

This much smaller interior would definitely take some getting used to, but it wasn't precisely a bad change. James Robert McCrimmon was nothing if not used to change.

"Of course I do!" He reassured her. He could tell she was worried about this, and Jamie did not want her to feel she had to impress him, or anything. "Which bed do I get?"
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 7th, 2009 04:51 am (UTC)
For a moment, she wanted to tell him that he could share one with her. Jenny had seen and read enough to know it was what individuals attracted to each other tended to do. She had even done so once on Abalon, with a lord's son after she had experienced sex for the first time.

But just as quickly as the thought popped in her head, a fear that she might scare Jamie off did as well. So she shrugged, trying her best to look nonchalant.

"Whichever you want."
[identity profile] creag-an-tuire.livejournal.com on May 10th, 2009 02:25 am (UTC)
If this had been Victoria, Jamie would very likely have made some joke about sharing beds; she always use to get so mad when he would joke around with her, and it was very adorable, which is why he never quite stopped joking with her until she left. Naturally, the thought entered his mind to make a joke about it now, but, well. He hadn't known Jenny for very long, and not being sure how she would take it... he didn't want to seem improper, or anything ungentlemanly like that.

So, he simply smiled and flopped down on one of the beds. It was soft -- not as soft as the bed in his room in the TARDIS had been (to be fair though, he more often than not fell asleep in the big armchair in the console room anyway), but much softer than sleeping arrangements had been at home in Scotland.

"Guess I'll take this one then."
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 10th, 2009 03:18 am (UTC)
Jenny smiled as she watched Jamie make himself at home, feeling a little bit of her nervousness fade away. He looked happy. She hoped he was happy. It felt strange, worrying like this. But he was her first companion.

And, if she realised such, her first crush.

"Brilliant!" She nodded eagerly. "That'll be brilliant and I'll just sleep on the top one - when I sleep, that is. Do you... do you need anything else?"
[identity profile] creag-an-tuire.livejournal.com on May 20th, 2009 03:51 am (UTC)
The comment about 'when I sleep' earns a slight chuckle from Jamie. "Awh, don't tell me ye have the same sleep schedule as the Doctor." Because as long as he's known the man, Jamie can't recall more than one or two times of ever seeing the Doctor sleep, and even then, they weren't for very long.

"But, ah, no, I think I'm fine now, thanks." A pause. "Er, is there... anything you need my help with then?"

((OOC: gaaaah, I'm sorry this has taken so long! I fail, I'm sorry *flail*))

"Yeah," she answers, grinning with pride. Jenny's still fond of any similarities she can find between her and her father. Especially any similarities another might point out. "Yeah, I do!"

Then, quickly, she adds in: "But I won't keep you up. I promise, Jamie. And... and yeah. Ever wanted to learn how to fly a ship?"

Jenny's eyebrows went up as she looked at him with puppy dog eagerness. She wants so much to impress him, so much. And, apparently, flying a ship is the first thing she can think of.
