OOM: Off on an adventure!
Jenny turns around as she enters her ship, checking to see if Cavilo is still following. It's almost strange, not having Bart (or Edward or Alice) in the shuttle with her. Someone new instead - and it's been a while since she's really had a chance to show off.

Bart promised to take good care of Slowpoke when she left, all of a few minutes ago. Already she missed them both, but the promise of adventure is far too alluring for her to focus on it.

"Brilliant, isn't it?" she asks as she walks the short distance from entrance to cockpit. Over the months she's owned it, the number of possessions and photographs inside have racked up considerably. "I think it's the closest thing I have to a home. Aside from being with Jay in Milliways."

Jenny nodded, taking a seat in the extra chair. "Yeah. She's simple to fly; your basic design. Don't think Messaline colonialists were too creative with their technology."

Pr, at least, any technology beyond war and progenation machines.

"Ever flown before, Lara?"
toxic_perfume: smile[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 6th, 2009 12:12 am (UTC)
She grins. "Oh yes. I was a fighter pilot -- didn't I ever tell you?"

Jenny choosing the second chair is an invitation. Cavilo takes it, sliding into the pilot's seat and running her fingers very lightly over the controls.

Jenny shakes her head, looking at Cavilo with new earn respect.

"Think you can get her started without me talking you through it?"
toxic_perfume: fully in control[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 6th, 2009 01:05 am (UTC)
... Well, now she's got to try.

"I don't know," she says, and flashes that grin again. "Let's find out."

(She may be looking to see if any of the controls are labeled, either written or in pictographs.)
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 6th, 2009 02:42 am (UTC)
Some of the controls are labeled. By now, however, many of them are covered with more interesting images like drawings Bart's done or postcard-like images from various planets she's visited.

"Well?" Jenny asks, giving Cavilo a challenging look. "Show me what you've got, Lara!"
toxic_perfume: noir[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 6th, 2009 03:07 am (UTC)
The labels are enough to be going on with. She'd have preferred one chance to watch Jenny fly it first, but --

Her hand snakes out and flips two switches, quickly, and a panel of gauges and readouts flickers to life above the steering column. Another touch, and a quiet hum revs slowly to life, almost more felt than heard.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 6th, 2009 03:27 am (UTC)
Jenny watches quietly, ready to step in the second that Cavilo might do something wrong. But the lights flicker on in the proper order. Closing her eyes for a moment, she feels her ship coming to life.

"Good. We're on an empty planet, so don't worry about take off regulations."
toxic_perfume: glancing up[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 6th, 2009 03:47 am (UTC)
"Anything else I should know before I take us out of the hole?"

The ship's ready to fly; she can feel it.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 6th, 2009 03:22 pm (UTC)
Jenny shakes her head. "Just fly!"
toxic_perfume: fully in control[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 6th, 2009 04:11 pm (UTC)
Her hands settle on the steering column, and tighten, and pull --

And the ship leaps upward joyously, streaking toward the open sky.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 6th, 2009 09:54 pm (UTC)
Even if she wasn't the one driving, Jenny still couldn't help but let out a joyous whoop as the sky flew by them. She could see the stars approaching quickly now and the grin on her face wouldn't go away.
toxic_perfume: smile[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 6th, 2009 10:58 pm (UTC)
Cavilo's grinning too, delighting in the ship's responsiveness, and in the feel of the atmosphere thinning around them. Another moment or two and they'll be out of it entirely --

A weapon in the hand is power, but so is this, and something else too: freedom.

It's good to be flying again.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 6th, 2009 11:30 pm (UTC)
She pulls her eyes away from the screen to look over at Cavilo. The look on her friend's face is something that Jenny wants to recognise.

"You're doing a good job," she states. "Have any place in mind to go to?"
toxic_perfume: backlit[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 6th, 2009 11:52 pm (UTC)
She laughs at that. "Hon, this is your world. Where's good?"
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 7th, 2009 12:18 am (UTC)
Jenny joins in with the laughter. "Anywhere!"

At least, that's her opinion. There's still so much to see, after all.

"What are you looking for?"
toxic_perfume: backlit[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 7th, 2009 12:22 am (UTC)
She considers that.

"Someplace busy," she says at length. "Someplace where I can get a feel for the people here. A space station, maybe?"
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 7th, 2009 12:54 am (UTC)
"Or a city planet," Jenny suggests, reaching for the computer to search for possible destinations. "There are a lot of people here. Lots of different races. Do you want one specific kind of people or a multitude?"
toxic_perfume: noir[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 7th, 2009 02:03 am (UTC)
"A multitude," she says decisively. "The more the better."

They'll be strangers there. And strangers are at a distinct disadvantage in an otherwise homogenous group.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 7th, 2009 02:11 am (UTC)
Jenny nods, finally stopping the computer on the Nise Station. "There. We'll go there. If I tell you how, think you can plug the coordinates into the computer?"
toxic_perfume: backlit[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 7th, 2009 02:26 am (UTC)
"How about you do it the first time," she suggests, "and I'll pick it up from there."
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 7th, 2009 02:52 am (UTC)
Jenny nodded, reaching across the console to plug in the coordinates. She tried to move slowly, slow enough for Cavilo to follow. But by now, the actions were second nature to her.

Soon enough, the view screen in front of her switched off. She turned to smile at Cavilo. "We'll be there in a half hour, okay?"
toxic_perfume: noir[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 7th, 2009 03:03 am (UTC)
Not to worry; Cavilo's a quick study. She's already picking up the basics.

"Half an hour," she muses aloud. "What's this sweetheart got in the way of onboard computer memory?"
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 7th, 2009 03:50 am (UTC)
Jenny gives a figure, running a hand fondly over the small computer terminal. "She hasn't been used much, not since before I commandeered her."
toxic_perfume: noir[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 7th, 2009 03:59 am (UTC)
"That's a fair amount," she says approvingly. "Have you got an onboard library? Or encyclopedia, maybe? I'm thinking I could stand to read up on the nearby worlds."
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 7th, 2009 04:28 am (UTC)
With slight reluctance, Jenny hands over the small computer terminal she had used to narrow down their destination. She rather liked playing with it herself.

"Here. Just key in characteristics and it'll give you something."
toxic_perfume: fully in control[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 7th, 2009 04:35 am (UTC)
Cavilo observes the reluctance, and doesn't mind it at all.

"So this is where we're going?" she asks, tapping the screen.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 7th, 2009 04:53 am (UTC)
Jenny nods. "Yeah. It's relatively recent, meant for iron miners on the Nise's moon."
toxic_perfume: backlit[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 7th, 2009 04:56 am (UTC)
"Mining town," she says thoughtfully. "Gets a good deal of shipping traffic too, though, I see -- it's a refueling stop?"
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 7th, 2009 05:01 am (UTC)
"And a home for those that don't actually want to live on planet," Jenny adds in, slowly spinning around within her chair. "Don't get why. More room to explore on a planet."
toxic_perfume: noir[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 7th, 2009 05:09 am (UTC)
"And a transfer stop too, looks like," she continues, scrolling down the page. "The station's run by the ... Zavash," sounding out the name. "That's the corporation that owns the mine. Corporate-owned. That's always interesting."
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 7th, 2009 03:55 pm (UTC)
Jenny glances up at that statement, raising her eyebrows. "Interesting? How?"
toxic_perfume: noir[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 7th, 2009 11:14 pm (UTC)
Cheerfully: "Well, it means they don't have to act like a government. No laws but their own regulations."
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 8th, 2009 12:43 am (UTC)
Jenny nods slowly.

"So?"
toxic_perfume: fully in control[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 8th, 2009 12:49 am (UTC)
"So I've been a few places like that," she says, "and it's usually pretty interesting. We'll see if this place matches up."

It means that corruption is likely to be so prevalent as to be a system in and of itself; the only question is whether they're furtive and stealthy about it, or as open about it as the Jacksonians. There's a different approach required, depending on that question.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on May 8th, 2009 01:40 am (UTC)
Pulling her legs up on to the seat and folding them, Jenny nods. She's travelled a lot, but Cavilo certainly seems to know a thing or two herself. "I like interesting."
toxic_perfume: fully in control[personal profile] toxic_perfume on May 8th, 2009 02:46 am (UTC)
Cavilo stretches, and smiles.

"So do I, hon. So do I."
