OOM: Edward needs to learn how to have fun.
"I think we'll start with Dagobah," Jenny told him as she walked towards the cockpit of her small shuttle. "According to my computer, it's a small swamp planet discovered a thousand years ago by a sect of Jedi who had broken away from the Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire after a deceleration decreeing all religions founded upon fictional works were null and void. There's not much there now. It's been abandoned... um, well, for a while."

She stopped by her chair, turning around to make sure that Edward had indeed followed her from Milliways.

Her shuttle wasn't much, Jenny knew, but she considered it her life. It was the only home she had (unless you counted the room in Milliways) and her only means of actually doing anything. Well, anything remotely interesting. Random knickknacks from various planets were scattered about the room, mostly concentrated away from the cockpit and in the back of the shuttle. A couple of photographs of herself and Bart were taped on to various walls. Her prized piece of psychic paper was lying underneath a stack of books.

It felt more like a home now than when she commandeered it from Messaline.

"Well?" Jenny slid into the pilot's seat and looked at him. "Whatcha think, Edward?"

"It was really just the hover coaster," Jenny explained, turning around to give it a farewell wave. "This was supposed to be your trip, after all. You get to pick what we do. Well - now that we're here and we've gone on the coaster. It's your day, Edward."

A day that, for the most part, she'd done little more than mess up and boss around. But she couldn't help it. He had all these rules of things he couldn't do or didn't want to. She just wanted to please him.

In Jenny's mind it was simple. He did envy that.

"It has been nice, all things considered." Edward watched people passing, before something caught. "We could stop and get you lunch. Back home, people have a fondness for carnival and park food."

Not that any of it smelled appetizing to him.

"But that wouldn't be fair," Jenny pointed out. She's smelled the food and mostly ignored it, not being that hungry.

It was, she had noticed, another thing that differed from humans. She didn't grow hungry as easily, just like she didn't need as much sleep. Especially when compared to Bart's metabolism.

"Your food is back on my shuttle and it would be rude to eat without you having anything."
Edward Cullen: Of course I'm listening[personal profile] themidnightson on August 27th, 2008 02:15 am (UTC)
Edward wrinkled his nose at the whole mention of the last part. The idea of blood in a cup wasn't his favorite, even if her ship had a way to warm it up.

"I've hunted recently enough that it isn't a problem."
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 27th, 2008 02:43 am (UTC)
"Well, I ate recently enough that it isn't a problem, either," she insisted stubbornly.

Even though it was the truth. She had a banana for breakfast, along with banana bread and a cuppa. That's been enough to get her through the day.

"I don't want you to be bored."

"Something else then." His voice was rueful, but touched with laughter. He set a hand against her shoulder and moved her, just slightly enough, as he started walking, over looking things. "There are games, but you'll give me the same spiel about boredom. Shows?"
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 27th, 2008 03:03 am (UTC)
She followed his nudge and walked closely beside him in this new direction. There were a few odd buildings and a few tents to resemble the carnival side shows that used to exist on Earth

"Do you like shows?" As they strolled down a boulevard and passed a school group made up of a multitude of races, Jenny scanned the adverts for shows. "What about the Psychic Circus? Or, well, maybe something without clowns? Like - oh! There's apparently a Star Poet here! We should see that!"
Edward Cullen: Intruiging Thoughts[personal profile] themidnightson on August 27th, 2008 03:06 am (UTC)
"A Star Poet?" He mimicked her words, placing emphasis on the first as a name rather than an object, asking its significance. It did at least sound better than clowns.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 27th, 2008 03:22 am (UTC)
"Butterfly People, Arcateenians."

Now Jenny was nudging Edward in a direction, towards the banners that indicated a small tent set aside for traveling performances. She had lit up at his curiosity, deciding this was definitely the proper course.

"They're beautiful to look at. We might've seen a few while we were walking. Dazzling people, with these long tendrils that radiate outward and they glow. It's beautiful. And they have these songs, poems about the nature of the universe and... and they're supposed to be hauntingly brilliant, I think. At least, that's what I've heard."
Edward Cullen: Smile SmallShiny[personal profile] themidnightson on August 27th, 2008 03:26 am (UTC)
Interest caught in his expression, no matter how much he considered looking neutral. Music, poetry, beauty and aliens collided, so he followed her nudging direction, setting his eyes on the newest small tent.

"It sounds worth the trip."
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 27th, 2008 03:33 am (UTC)
"That's what I've heard."

She caught the interest in his eyes and picked up her pace, rushing through the amusement park dome as quickly as she could. Her own speed wouldn't ever be fast enough for the girl. Thankfully, Astroland tended to clump their major attractions close together. It didn't take Jenny long to guide them to the small tent, where the last bits of a line were trickling inward.

"Looks like we got here just in time!"
Edward Cullen: Uncertain Amusement or Annoyance[personal profile] themidnightson on August 27th, 2008 03:39 am (UTC)
"What a coincidence." He sounded amused, but it was rather easy to just flow inward, both of them scanning the audience, tugging for a moment toward seats. They ended up a few rows from the front and Edward settled his hands together watching the empty stage, with a determinedly, unblinking, focus.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 27th, 2008 02:37 pm (UTC)
Jenny shrugged as she sat, not exactly believing in coincidences. The decent timing was clearly because of her, because she was a Time Lady. It was a silly thought, she knew, but it was still one she liked.

The lights dimmed a few seconds later and the audience suddenly hushed. The glow that filled the room shortly after wasn't artificial, but radiating from the woman who floated down from the top of the tent. She was as every bit as beautiful as Jenny expected. Her tentacles spread out like wings and her internal organs lit up, bathed in the bio-luminescence.

The Star Poet smiled, a smile that illuminated the room as much as anything else, bathing the audience in peace. She touched a pendant that rested on her chest and her voice began to fill the minds of those around. She spoke of the nature of the universe in poetic harmonized tones: of life and death and those lonely gods that wander, of peace and violence, of kinship and loneliness, trust and fear, and the very majesty of existence in all forms.

Jenny stared in awe as she spoke in her silent manner, feeling surprisingly at ease. Some members in the audience shifted uncomfortably: be it at the telepathic communication or the meaning of the words.

It was beyond beautiful.

Edward wasn't one of the ones that shifted, but when they did he moved his focus to trying not to hear the uncomfortable voices around him. Her voice was so smooth and modulated, designed with an intention to gently touch them without hurting them. It was gentle and silken, the perfect road for her message.

Haunting and sweet and painful. His golden eyes never left her, blinking only a handful of time when the thought would catch up with him late. The tale was timeless and echoed things he couldn't help but agree with and feel.

[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 27th, 2008 04:44 pm (UTC)
Unlike the ride, the Star Poet's performance didn't go by too quickly. It didn't go by too slowly, either. It seemed just right. Absolutely perfect.

When it ended, Jenny sat stunned for a second before bursting into a loud applause. The rest of the crowd followed seconds later.

She nudged Edward in the side. Jenny looked him over quickly before asking in a revered tone, "Wasn't that amazing?"

Edward opened his eyes at the nudge, realizing then he had at some point closed them. Let himself be swept away in the awe of her narrative and ability, pushing away (some of) the outward distractions that might snag his attention.

"Very," he said, tone soft as he felt a longing to sit and play again. Twice in so many weeks after so long.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 27th, 2008 07:07 pm (UTC)
Jenny smiled softly at his response and she rested her head against his arm. The applause had begun to die down and the Star Poet was finishing her last bows. She giggled a little and clapped one or two more times.

"She was brilliant," she murmured, blinking back tears. The mention of the lonely gods had struck a chord. It made her think of her father and of what she might become someday. "It nearly hurt listening to her. But in a good way, I think."
Edward Cullen: Pretty and Pleased[personal profile] themidnightson on August 27th, 2008 07:23 pm (UTC)
Edward clapped along with the people who finished up, gently for the fact Jenny's head lay on his arm and he didn't want to bump her too hard suddenly with the movement.

"Some of the best things are."

The price of the shadow and the beauty of what it brought.

He glanced at the top of her head on his arm, thinking this wasn't as horrible as it could be.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 27th, 2008 07:38 pm (UTC)
"It's not entirely fair though," Jenny sighed as some people stood to talk with the Butterfly Person. She stood there gracefully, willing to talk to anyone and everyone. "What if we didn't ask for this sort of life? I think I would've been completely content with life as a soldier."

Of course, she never would have known any better.
Edward Cullen: I wanted to know[personal profile] themidnightson on August 27th, 2008 07:41 pm (UTC)
"I was going to be."

The words came before he meant them to, which caused him to chuckle and look from her head to the Butterfly Woman and her crowd.

"Before I fell sick I was counting down the months until I could be drafted and fight in in the first world war. I hadn't counted on doing otherwise."

She tilted her head up in surprise. He never came across as the soldier sort to Jenny, only the really loyal and overly protective type. Although, she had to admit, those were good qualities for a soldier. He would've made for someone she would have been proud to work beside in a militia.

"And now we've both wound up with lives that want us to do otherwise. And won't let us die, either, not properly, not if we can avoid it," she whispered, looking a little worried It was like that conversation from earlier. "How do you live with it, Edward?"

"One day at a time."

It was a poor answer, as he thought about waking up from thinking he was dead.

Then.

"With the help of family."
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on August 28th, 2008 02:18 am (UTC)
Family.

Jenny had a father, yes, but not the sort of father that would probably ever stick around, even if she did find him again. At first, when she had left Messaline, she thought this freedom would be increadible. But after hearing so much about families, she was starting to doubt it.

"Something that I probably won't ever really have," she muttered glumly.
Edward Cullen: Behind Golden Eyes[personal profile] themidnightson on August 28th, 2008 02:31 am (UTC)
"You'll find your place, or it'll find you." Edward stood up in a refined and graceful manner, that to him still seemed far too slow and calm. "I didn't wake up the first day with mine."

No, in fact, he didn't.

He was alone. There was Carlisle. And the void.

(And never alone, thanks to the sudden deluge of voices in his head.)

And neither did she. But it's been two months.

"What about you?" Jenny tore her gaze from the Arcateenian to look up at Edward. She tried not to look as desperate and worried as she suddenly felt. "You and your family? You're the only other person I've ever met who's going to live anywhere as long as me. And you're good at this. You're good at this big brother thing."
