Lessons learned; for [livejournal.com profile] laser_not_sonic
She had slept better than she ever had that night, feeling almost safe and content in the room that the TARDIS had picked out for her.

It was a lovely room, the sort that inspired a smile the moment she walked inside it. Carpeted in deep red from wall to wall, the fabric felt soft on her feet. There was a lovely large bed all to herself and a wardrobe filled with clothing of varying colours and material that she had never even seen before. It was so much better than that daft shuttle of hers, better than anything she had ever possessed. And that shower. Oh that shower.

Not only had she slept better than she had ever before that night, Jenny had also fallen asleep the instant her head touched a pillow.

The next day seemed to come quicker than she had ever expect it. As an artificial light filtered the room, excitement filtered her heart. They were going on a trip today, weren't they? Her first trip through time and space! Jenny giggled, jumping out of the bed

Normally, it would have been easy enough for her to ready herself for the day. Hair pulled back in a tail, simple choice of clothing. But today? Right now? Oh, there were so many choices. How could she ever chose what would please him the most?

Another laugh escaped Jenny at the thought. Was she really dressing to impress him?

Yeah, it turned out as she began to rifle through her options. Yeah, she was.

After Jenny had left for her room, the Master returned to the console room, flicked on The Knife- Swedish electropop made strangely good music for formulating an evil plot- and had begun to run through places he could take Jenny. It hadn't been long before he'd hit on the perfect place, though, and he'd smirked to himself, indulging in a quiet, diabolical chuckle. The TARDIS's walls were soundproofed; Jenny wouldn't hear him.

No sleep for him that night, but then, the Master rarely slept. He rarely needed to.

When Jenny left her room, she'd find him at the console, impeccably dressed in his usual suit, absently tapping out that quadruple beat as he perused something on a small computer screen. Occasionally, he would tap the screen with a finger, dragging a symbol from here to there, or confirming a choice. Setting coordinates.

When she did enter, he looked up absently, and flashed her a manic grin. 'Hello, Miss Jenny.'
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on September 25th, 2008 01:09 am (UTC)
Having her hair down when she entered the console room made Jenny nearly feel like a whole other person. But the pony tail seemed nearly ridiculous now, a remnant of the girl she left behind the previous night when she gave herself to the Master. It curled over her shoulders, covering the black leather jacket worn over a purple top.

The leather pants she found strange as well, different from the military regulation canvas she was used to, as was the heel on her boot. But at the same time, it gave her confidence as she walked. Confidence that she could become a goddess and everything that he wanted.

However, that bright grin had gone no where and shone when her Master spoke her name. "Hello, Master! Oh, thank you for the room. It's terrific! I love it."
[identity profile] laser-not-sonic.livejournal.com on September 25th, 2008 04:09 am (UTC)
Well well, Jenny seemed to be working the 'Matrix' look; all she needed was a pair of sunglasses and to lose that smile, and she'd have it down. Still though, the leather trousers suited her admirably, and he took a moment to let his eyes wander down over shapely hips and thighs.

At her words, he waved a dismissive hand. 'No need to thank me; it's the TARDIS. She's alive, by the way,' he added abruptly, not sure if she actually knew that or not. 'The ship, I mean. At least, in a way.'
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on September 25th, 2008 04:25 am (UTC)
"Is she?"

Jenny tilted her head as she ran a hand down the nearest wall of the TARDIS. She shivered ever so much as she did and grinned. Alive, huh? That suddenly made all of this even more amazing.

"That's why you said I could stay until I grew my own," Jenny murmured as she walked closer to him and the console. She grinned and leaned forward a little as if to whisper to the ship alone. "Thank you, then, TARDIS. I do love the room."

'Oh yes.' The Master smiled over at her absently as he further adjusted something on the screen before him. 'I'll be teaching you how to fly her as well. After we've travelled for a while, and you see how I do it.'

Growing another TARDIS was hardly as simple as all that, not with Gallifrey gone and the Matrix with it, but the Master was quite sure he'd be able to accomplish it. After all, there was little the Master couldn't accomplish if he'd a mind. Generating huon particles wasn't difficult, nor composing a solution in which a young TARDIS could grow, but finding sufficient psychic power would be a hard thing. A young TARDIS needed to be contained within a psychic net during its first months of life, and two Time Lords- especially one so young as Jenny- would hardly be sufficient.

But! Now was not the time to be considering that. Jenny wouldn't be getting a TARDIS of her own until she was quite a bit older, and certainly not until she had looked into the Vortex.

'I'm sure she appreciates your thanks,' he said rather wryly. 'Come here.' He gestured her over, indicating the screen on the console, which had switched to lines of equations and coordinates, showing where and when they were headed.

'Can you understand any of this? Any navigation included in your programming?'
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on September 27th, 2008 03:59 am (UTC)
She turned to look at him, eyes alight with eagerness. She would get to learn how to fly her? Really? Jenny was certain that that sounds almost as good as sex to her ears. And it was almost as wonderful as getting to travel through time for the first time in her life.

Her hands slid gently along the console as he beckoned her over to the screen. The lines of equations and coordinates ran through her head. To her surprise, they weren't much different than those she had seen in her shuttle, guiding her through space. There were similarities. But at the same time, there were differences in there that Jenny wasn't sure she understood at all.

"I can fly your basic emergency shuttle and fighter ship," she responded promptly, tearing her eyes away from the screen for a moment to look at him. "But this... some of it makes sense, but I think the rest... the rest has to do with time, doesn't it?"
[identity profile] laser-not-sonic.livejournal.com on September 27th, 2008 05:33 am (UTC)
The Master watched patiently as Jenny looked at the screen, furrows appearing in her forehead, her lips pursing. He could read the understanding in her face, in her mind, but equally, the frustration at what she didn't know. It's only the coordinates that involve time, though, and he nods when she asks him about it.

'Good, yes. That-' he points to a line, and then a few others, 'and that- those are all time. You're used to working in three dimensions; I'm going to teach you how to work in four.'

It should come fairly naturally to her, the temporal physics and knowledge of bending and shaping the Vortex needed to pilot a TARDIS. It is a Time Lord's birthright, after all.

'See there?' One finger taps a spot on the screen, lighting up the characters there. 'That's the timeline of our final destination. The year 4675. That's the simple part. The rest of it is how to get there. Manipulating the Vortex... pulling the strings, as it were.'
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on September 27th, 2008 05:39 am (UTC)
Jenny nodded, her eyes following his finger along the line. Four dimensions, time and space. It sounded horribly intimidating but she still felt confident enough to pull it off. She was going to be a Time Lady, after all. It would be absolutely daft if she couldn't.

"Okay," she murmured, reaching a finger of her own out to touch the screen. "Four dimensions. Final destination year 4675, planet Traken."

She could see that easily enough. In real space, Traken wasn't necessarily all that far away from where they were now. But in time... in time it was forever away. She chewed thoughtfully on her lip as she studied the screen.

"How do you manipulate the Vortex? Can I do that without looking into it?"
[identity profile] laser-not-sonic.livejournal.com on September 27th, 2008 05:55 am (UTC)
'You can. It's just a matter of knowing which buttons and levers to push, really- but can you understand it? That's something different altogether.'

And it's something that will come with time and experience. Once she's looked into the Vortex, seen all of Time laid out before her, then it'll come easily. 'A Time Lord must move through Time and Space like a bird through the air, a fish through the water,' he quoted, before offering as explanation, 'Rasillon, our glorious founder.' His voice was heavy with sarcasm. At some point, he supposed, he would have to teach her about Gallifreyan history as well.

But certainly not at the moment. That was too dull a subject to cover just after the girl had woken up.

Sliding off the jumpseat, he bounced a little on his heels, sliding around the console, pushing- just as he'd said- levers and buttons. 'Traken,' he said, a little louder- a schoolmaster's voice- 'is an extremely enlightened planet. Pacifists, philosophers, mathematicians. Or, well-' he pulled an exaggerated little face- 'I should say it was. Doesn't exist anymore.'

He neglected to mention that it was because of him that it had been destroyed. No need for the dear girl to know that, after all.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on September 27th, 2008 06:02 am (UTC)
"Yeah?"

She'd understand it someday. Of that, she promised herself. But not now. Now was just about memorizing the controls to fly this ship. It could come in handy one day, just like everything else Jenny had picked up.

Like that name Rasillon. She'd have to look up more about him. But later. This trip to a new planet was far more exciting.

Except-- "Pacifists?"

Jenny remembered being written off as pacifist stock by General Cobb. Pacifists in her mind were absolutely dull.

"Why are we going there?"

Even if it didn't exist anymore. Pacifists! They did nothing, right?

The Master laughed aloud at the disgust in her voice on that word. His own little soldier. But she would have to learn that there was more to life than just fighting. Or rather, that there was more than one way to fight.

He shot her a sternly amused glance over the console. 'Oh, you do have a lot to learn. Intellect, Jenny. That's what you'll need in order to understand that.' He nodded towards the screen with the coordinates. 'The inhabitants of Traken were... oh, they had such potential. Such learning and knowledge that they wasted, and had no way to protect themselves from their final doom. I want you to learn from them. Both from what they did do, and what they failed to.'

Perhaps later, he'd take her back to that day- the fall of Traken. Once she was fully and properly his. Just to show her how the Trakenians had failed, and how sweet his victory had been.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on September 27th, 2008 06:22 am (UTC)
In other words, her mind translated, why being a pacifist accomplished nothing. Dad had a point about not always needing to kill, but that didn't mean you shouldn't defend yourself.

Dad never would have properly defended himself against General Cobb.

But his gentle reprimand still bothered her. She had intellect! Jenny just had a lot to learn. And she was willing; hadn't she displayed that last night?

"Well. Well, okay. I trust you, right? I think I know the importance of being proactive, but, yeah. Yeah, you're right."

And it could be interesting, couldn't it?
[identity profile] laser-not-sonic.livejournal.com on September 27th, 2008 07:02 am (UTC)
'I often am.'

The words were mild enough, but the Master hooked Jenny with a gaze that let her know that such an attitude was not appreciated. She may have only been a month or so old, but the Master refused to deal with a sulky teenager aboard his ship. Certainly not when he was attempting to teach her.

Seeing her reaction, he let his expression soften somewhat. 'Jenny. I'm teaching you; of course you don't know everything yet. There's no shame in that.'
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on September 27th, 2008 07:08 am (UTC)
"I--"

Jenny couldn't help but feeling like there was. He was so much older than her, and knew so much more and she knew just how much she paled in comparison. She didn't like that feeling.

But still, feelings aside, she trusted him. Every fibre of her being wanted to believe every word her Master said. So she nodded and put a small smile on her face.

She'd learn everything someday, wouldn't she?

"Thank you," Jenny whispered quietly, meaning it for so much more than just for his current words. Then she laughed. "I'm so going to be in your debt one day for all of this, won't I?"

If the Master had been a sympathetic sort of man, he would have sympathised with Jenny's position. He'd been like that when he was younger, after all; hating that he didn't know everything, wanting to know it all, learn it all, but hating to ask advice of anybody. It wasn't fair, after all, he should just know, he shouldn't have to depend on anybody else to teach him.

But, as it stood, he wasn't a particularly sympathetic sort of man. He nodded approvingly when Jenny cut her protest off at the start, stopping to consider his words. He could see in her face when the decision had been made, and smirked a little when she laughed. Oh, she had no idea.

'In my debt? Nonsense, my dear. You are quite enough payment yourself.'

And it was completely true. Though not, perhaps, in entirely the way Jenny might think.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on September 27th, 2008 04:13 pm (UTC)
She beamed brightly at him in response to his words. It felt nice, really nice actually, to know that being herself was enough for someone. It hadn't been for Dad at first; Jenny couldn't ever forget that. But with the Master, with him, she could be. And she could embrace parts of herself she didn't even know existed, like that whole pleasure from pain bit.

Oh, that had been wonderful last night. Jenny couldn't wait for their next lesson in sex. But right now, there was another lesson at hand, wasn't there?

And they weren't getting there fast enough. She wrinkled her nose a little and stared at the screen before glancing back over to him. Time to learn again.

"How long does it usually take to travel through time? Does it vary with trips and destinations? Will we be there soon?" Jenny tilted her head, eyes alight with curiosity. "Will the TARDIS tell us when we've landed?"
[identity profile] laser-not-sonic.livejournal.com on September 29th, 2008 12:28 am (UTC)
Once again, her impatience wavered in between irritating and endearing, but the Master gave her an indulgent little smile nevertheless. 'It depends; physical distance through space, the amount of time that has to be negotiated... there are endless variables. But the TARDIS makes a quick job of it.'

Certainly, his flew much faster than the Doctor's decrepit old heap of a TARDIS, and the Master didn't have to hop around the console in that ridiculous fashion, holding levers down with his feet. Just as well. Still though, it was a fairly quick trip to Traken; Jenny wouldn't have to wait much longer.

'When we've landed,' he said, grinning, 'the TARDIS... will do... that.' And he nodded at the glowing time rotor in the centre of the console, which was slowing in its motion, eventually coming to a halt. He flashed one of those manic smiles at Jenny.

'We've arrived, my dear.'

Now that they were here, his mind was running through all the possible ways to carry out the plan that had formed the night before. This trip, after all, was not merely for fun. Well, it was going to be great fun for the Master, of course, but that was another thing. No, this was going to be an important, important lesson for young Miss Jenny; a good start to her education proper.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on September 29th, 2008 12:39 am (UTC)
She watched him with admiration as he flew the TARDIS through what she assumed to be the Vortex. It was an impressive sight, in her naive opinion, and Jenny couldn't wait for the day she got to pilot the ship. More than that, she still couldn't wait for the day she got to look into the Time Vortex herself.

Until then, she would be the good little student and continue to observe everything. And not look nearly as eager as she felt when the Master announced their arrival. But nothing, not all the preparation in the world, could stop that manic smile from crossing her face.

Except. Except this was a new time and place and pacifist planet or not, she suddenly felt uncomfortable going there unprepared. It was the soldier in her, the one that received her first weapon seconds after her birth. Her expression turned serious as she regarded the Master with curiosity.

"Is it safe to go out there without a weapon?" Jenny flushed slightly, hoping he wouldn't think it as awful a question as her dad would've. "I know you said they're pacifists but... but you said they're planet is gone now, too. Which means someone could've attacked and... and going out there unprepared is daft, isn't it?"
[identity profile] laser-not-sonic.livejournal.com on September 29th, 2008 01:30 am (UTC)
It was a battle to keep that smirk from curling his mouth into something predatory and pleased. Because oh, she really was making this far too easy for him, wasn't she? He wasn't even going to have to try and persuade her to carry a weapon! The Master fixed his face into something serious and schoolmasterly.

'Clever girl. Just as I was about to say.'

Holding up a finger to her to wait, the Master dipped below the line of the console for a moment, coming up with a small handgun, sleek and carbonised looking, the material it was made from shimmering somewhere in between gunpowder grey and a steely blue. He tossed it to her carelessly, knowing those honed soldier's reflexes of hers would catch it. Small it may have been, but it was deadly; on impact, the bullets would mushroom outwards, tiny fragments of shrapnel tearing through muscles and veins. And if that wasn't enough, once the bullet had exploded, the fine powder contained inside them- both flammable and toxic- would be released into the bloodstream. Not a quick death, but an inevitable one.

'Whatever the inhabitants of a planet may say about themselves, I never like to go unarmed. There are often outsiders less peaceful, and besides...' he gave her a twisted smile, 'I've made myself no few enemies over the course of my lifetime. Best to be careful.'
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on September 29th, 2008 01:44 am (UTC)
As he expected, Jenny caught the gun with ease. She turned it around in her hands, brows furrowed as she studied its design. Clearly much more impressive than anything the humans or Hath had on Messaline. Something this small was meant to do damage.

It was something a part of her couldn't help but admire.

She grinned up at him and slid the pistol into the pocket of her jacket. No reprimand. Only a 'clever girl.' That was so much better than anything Dad would have ever said, she was certain.

"It's lovely," she admitted honestly. "And I hope Traken will be just as. Is that everything, then? We've landed, we're prepared... I want to go see what another time looks like."
[identity profile] laser-not-sonic.livejournal.com on September 29th, 2008 02:19 am (UTC)
'Everything,' he confirmed, with a little nod. He himself had his laser screwdriver stowed in an inner pocket of his jacket, but he wasn't planning on using it, not unless his plans went utterly awry.

'Go on, then,' the Master said lazily, nodding over at the doors. 'Your first time... only fitting you should take the first step.'

The year 4675 was only a few generations before the Doctor had found his way here and the planet had fallen. The Master had contemplated bumping up the date a few years- after all, what a lark would it have been to have Jenny kill Tremas, or his precious daughter Nyssa? But that would have interfered with the Master's own past, and that was something he couldn't have. He'd landed the TARDIS in the abundant Trakenite woods, quite near to that clearing with the charming statue, but not too far a walk from the capital city. The jungle was lush and green, dripping with mosses and ferns, but curiously not humid. Jenny would appreciate it, he was sure.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on September 29th, 2008 02:29 am (UTC)
She flashed him one more grin before sprinting over to the door and outside into the fresh air. Jenny was merely a few steps away from the TARDIS when she came to a quick stopped and gasped.

It was beautiful! It was beyond beautiful, even. Oh, all the trees and all the green and that sky peaking between the canopy and wow. Oh, brilliant! Jenny laughed happily and twirled around in place for a moment. Perhaps it was a tad warm, especially given the leather pants she had chosen.

Still, she couldn't imagine anything better.

"Do we get to meet people, too?" Jenny asked the Master excitedly when he approached. "Is there a city nearby or are we staying to the woods? Will we look out of place? Will people care?"
[identity profile] laser-not-sonic.livejournal.com on September 29th, 2008 03:12 am (UTC)
The Master laughed as Jenny twirled in place, laughing giddily, laconically following her out through the TARDIS's doors, shutting them behind him and leaning against the tree the ship had become, blending perfectly in with the rest of the woods.

'Anyone you like,' he waved an indulgent hand in response to her question. 'We're within easy walking distance of the capital city. Civilisation, Jenny- a mighty civilisation at its peak; you'll be astounded.'

Of course, the Master had no idea what she'd done in the few months she'd been alive thus far, but he'd be willing to bet she'd not come across many places like Traken. Too busy following in her father's footsteps and helping the oppressed and the poor to bother with the magnificent. Well, this would be something new for her.

His lips quirking, he crooked his fingers at her, beckoning her to join him as he made his way out of the clearing. 'Let's be off, then. No time to waste, eh?' He lifted a sardonic eyebrow at the baleful statue of Melkur as he passed it, unable to resist.
[identity profile] bitunlikely.livejournal.com on September 29th, 2008 03:25 am (UTC)
"Or all the time in the world," she replied with a happy laugh before losing herself in her thoughts.

A civilisation at its peak? Jenny could only imagine what that must be like. Messaline had been anything but, a war torn society when she was born and a just recovering one when she left. It had been bleak and ugly and only the room with the source had been anything beautiful.

As for the other planets she had encountered on her travels, well, they were nice but nothing like this. Nothing nearly as lush and alive. She took a deep breath as she followed him, closing her eyes for a second and just letting herself hear and smell the world around her.

Amazing.

It was such a shame that it wouldn't last.

"I love it," she declared as they passed by the statue. "This time travelling thing? Oh, you're right. Staying in one point is vulgar!"
[identity profile] laser-not-sonic.livejournal.com on September 29th, 2008 03:58 am (UTC)
'Oh, you've seen nothing yet, my dear.'

The Master chuckled softly as Jenny gaped around herself, taking everything in. Because oh, it was true. He had so much to show her. How truly vulgar her life had been before he found her.

The woods soon bled away, giving way to flat, stretching plains, the green of the grass flecked with orange and yellow flowers. Through the grass ran a thin ribbon of stone, a path leading from the grove to the great citadel, and indeed it wasn't long until it rose into view; all white marble and rose and orange sandstone, warm and shining in the sunlight. The great, round domes of universities and laboratories rose above many other buildings, the spires of other buildings here and there shining with gilt.

It was a lavish city, built for those who had nothing more to do than think, and right now, it was at its height. They didn't even bother with guards at the main entrance to the city, and the Master ushered Jenny in before him when they arrived.
